According to Toronto media Sportsnet on the 14th (Korean time), Toronto coach John Schneider reported the news of Ryu Hyun-jin’s rehabilitation ahead of the away game against the 2023 Major League Baseball Baltimore Orioles, which will be held on the same day. Toronto coach Schneider said, “Ryu Hyun-jin will conduct live pitching this week to deal with batters.”

Ryu Hyun-jin underwent an elbow ligament joint surgery last summer and is concentrating on rehabilitation to return in the second half of this season. It is reported that his rehabilitation process is proceeding smoothly. Ryu Hyun-jin joined the Toronto team in time for an away game against the Tampa Bay Rays at the end of last month and digested the bullpen pitching. He stopped eating late-night snacks and lost weight, so his slimmer appearance than before became a hot topic. Since then, Ryu Hyun-jin has returned to the club’s training facility in Dunedin, Florida, USA, and is preparing for his return to the major leagues.

It is encouraging that he has built up his body to the stage where he can handle live pitching. Ryu Hyun-jin plans to learn a sense of actual combat through his live pitching. He threw two innings this time, but plans to gradually increase the number of innings in the future. If Ryu Hyun-jin does well with his live pitching, he will have a rehab match in the minor leagues. If he manages to make it through several rehab games, he will be promoted to the major leagues.

Director Schneider revealed that he had a video call with Ryu Hyun-jin and Alec Manoa. After the opening, Manoa, who was in charge of the first starter, was demoted to the rookie-level Florida Complex League (FCL) Blue Jays due to sluggish performance, and was reunited with Ryu Hyun-jin in Dunedin. “It’s good to have friends,” Schneider said, adding that the two pitchers would benefit from training together.
